Ambient Intelligent Computing Available Everywhere - All the Time

What is Ambient Intelligent Computing?

Ambient is an adjective used to describe a physical domain, environment, context, climate, or the atmosphere that surrounds us. Unobtrusive, ubiquitous, and calming, like ambient music playing in the background.

Ambient intelligent computing is an architectural concept, not a technology. In the future, technology, as we know it, the hardware, software, human/machine interaction, protocols, standards, and smart devies will blend and fade into the background of our physical domains.

Ambient intelligent computing uses advances in sensors, pervasive computing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. 5G networks are the connective tissue that will link the ambient intelligent computer services together. With super-fast speed, low latency, and instant connectivity. Ten times faster than today's 4G.

Ambient Intelligent Computing is always on, always available. As the technology gets smaller, smarter. more connected, and disappearing into our domains where only the interface will be perceivable by the users. Built on artificial intelligent computing, context awareness, and a human centric interactive design that is personalized, adaptive, and anticipatory.

Ambient intelligent computing will reshape the future, the ultimate in disruptive change, altering the nature and fabric of our physical domains. With AI integrated chips, advances in wearable devices, motion gesture-based features, facial recognition, voice recognition, and artificial intelligence, the smart domain will sense the presence of people and initiate interaction, helping people improve their lives. Continually listening, monitoring, and responding to our needs. Seamlessly guiding us, offering smart suggestions and ideas for whatever we are trying to achieve, learn, or do. Easily and invisibly.

With your new ambient multiscreen laptop, you can interact with the device without opening it. It will identify you through facial recognition and automatically log you in, accessing your calendar for the day on one screen and displaying your emails and messages on another screen.

Google is changing its mission from organizing and accessing the world's data to Ambient Computing Services. Their goal is to be helpful. They want to be everywhere you need it, useful and in a way that feels natural, anytime anyplace. Their new products will supply intelligent interaction in styles that blend into domains – the environment around us.

Google has a head start in ambient computing with its search engine, cloud services, and new smartphone.

The first generation of smart technologies are available today in our automobiles, smart thermostats, security systems, low voltage home lighting controls, motorized window treatments, distributed multi-room audio and video systems and intelligent digital assistants. Speakers in the ceiling, walls, on a table or bookshelf, in the shower or pool area are designed to blend into the background.

Easy to use with a smart device, touch panel or keypad on the wall, we can set our thermostats to lower and raise the temperature at various times of the day. Our security operating systems use sensors; smoke, fire, motion, water, low-temperature thermostats, exterior doors, and windows sensors, if armed on the touch panel, will communicate to our security company that a fault has occurred. A loud siren and voice will alert occupants – Fire Fire Fire leave immediately, leave immediately – Intruder Intruder Intruder, the police have been notified.

Today's automobiles have a series of sensors warning the occupants to fasten the seatbelt, the tire pressure is low, or the car is close to an external object. In reverse, a camera comes on, displaying the area behind the vehicle.

Smart home lighting controls can brighten or dim the lights in an area, turn all the lights on or off, and can supply a lighted pathway from the entrance to various locations in the home.

A virtual digital assistant is a computer program connected to the Internet, using voice-enabled natural language processing to help a user by answering questions and performing basic tasks.

From mass marketing to mass individualization. From supplying options to providing answers.

Today’s consumers expect smart products that collect, and analyze their data, applying artificial intelligence to how they live, learn, work and play

The future of ambient computing will add the latest generation of semiconductor processing with AI chips, advanced memory chips, 5G chips, motion sensors, smart cameras, smart speakers, and microphones, to our domains, securely communicate data through 5G/Fiber Optics to a cloud computing application database, and apply artificial intelligence, based upon our unique domain and individual requirements.

With the processing speed of today's 5G networks, the network is the computer.

Understanding Artificial Intelligence

We use Artificial intelligence (AI) in our virtual assistant, speech, image, and facial recognition, decision-making, weather forecasting, hiring and selection, cyber-security, medical diagnosis, and translation between languages. Whole industries are getting smarter.

All computer technologies employ the core concepts of input, information processing, and output. Understanding these concepts is essential to understanding Artificial Intelligence.

Ambient intelligence is not possible without the use of artificial intelligence. Ambient intelligent computing systems will create terabytes of data every day about how our world works. The data in a variety of formats will be ingested and stored for now in a cloud vendor database, then normalize for processing.

Sense, reason, learn, act, and adapt. Artificial intelligence algorithms pattern recognition will process the data, discovering relationships, learning from massive amounts of structured and unstructured content from images, videos, documents, emails, websites, databases, and the human voice.

Without explicit programming, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning systems can train the computer from scratch.

What is Edge Computing

Computing at the edge of the Internet gives ambient intelligent computing systems the ability to make real time decisions instantly at the source of the data. In the future artificial intelligence data will be collected and processed in our interface devices, at the edge of the Internet, not sent to a cloud for processing.

With edge computing, our ambient interface devices will control our data, and speed up

 decision-making.

With the design of specialized chips, technology firms are making advances in artificial intelligence. Solving problems for industry, government agencies, healthcare, scientific research, agriculture, and education.

Ambient Intelligent Computing Infrastructure

Ambient Intelligent Computing sensors will automatically detect human presence and react to the wake-up words: "Hi, ambient." turning on a camera, the smart television in ambient mode, and initiate the virtual assistant that can intelligently interact with context awareness.

We envision future Ambient Intelligent operating systems will answer the question: Who is the User?

By supplying a domain dashboard, the local administrator can control settings that define and adjust some domain processing options.

Amazon, Google, and Microsoft lead the cloud vendor category. Artificial intelligence is available in degree across the industry. Nuance leads the speech recognition software.

In the smart home category, we have Google Hub, Amazon Nest Protect, Echo, and ring stick-up intelligent home security camera, Comcast in-home health monitoring device and health AI-assisted, and Samsung Smart Home Operating System.

ADT Smart Home Security System can control lights, locks, thermostats, and the garage door remotely.

Who will win the race for an ambient intelligent computing infrastructure operating system? Smart agents, working together to support the unique requirements of different individuals and domains.

Be prepared for voice recognition in automobiles, smart homes, wearable health monitoring devices, productivity at home and in meeting rooms, fitness facilities, classrooms, hospital rooms, doctor's office, law office, assisted living facilities, and in the future of law enforcement.

Ambient intelligent computing is an emerging discipline that brings intelligence to our everyday environments and makes our physical domains sensitive to us.

Ambient Intelligent Computing is a vision of our shared future that promises to revolutionize our lives by making our physical domains intelligent, flexible, and adaptive. Still, in our paradoxical world, most of us resist change with a powerful bias for the status quo.

Where is Ambient Intelligent Computing Going?

Traditional computing technologies started with Mainframes, evolved to Timesharing, Minicomputers and Personal Computing.  Today is about the web, mobile, cloud computing and Internet of things. Tomorrow, ambient intelligent computing will be  available everywhere - an integral part of our environment.

Soon, we will begin to see ambient intelligent computing  in smart cities, smart transportation systems, supply chain management systems, aging-in-place smart home technologies with on-site and remote care, doctors' offices, law offices, law enforcement, universities, hospitals, meeting rooms, fitness centers, vehicles, stores, and long-term care facilities.

Distributed multiple agent systems, sensing with face-based authentication, capturing information about our unique domains, learning from our interactions, our locations, helping solve our problems. Interacting with us intelligently through natural language voice recognition, and with reasoned contextual awareness.

Ambient Intelligent Computing is likely to generate new data regulations and requirements that direct organizations to meet stringent data privacy standards.

The Challenges

Ambient Intelligent Computing Will Need Radio Frequency Spectrum, Trust, & Privacy

5G and the Challenges of Conventional Fixed Spectrum Allocation

The demand for radio frequency spectrum is on the rise due to the growing demand for wireless technology. Regulatory authorities assign fixed radio frequency spectrum chunks to the US Department of Defense, Commerce Department, NOAA, NASA, Weather Satellites, Cellphone Carriers, Automakers, Utilities, and Satellite Firms.

The future may be dynamic spectrum allocation to access underutilized radiofrequency spectrum chunks.

Trust and Privacy

A friend emailed the following comments – we talk to Alexa and have AI-assisted lighting, even wear a Fitbit. I love being connected, but I want to know when I'm being listened to, when my data is being collected and by whom and for what purpose.

The fundamental questions of the ambient intelligent computing revolution – what are the legal requirements of individuals and businesses that handle our data, observe our behavior, and track our locations.

Can we find the balance between the benefits of ambient intelligent computing versus the privacy concerns and rights of those living in smart homes, smart offices, smart cities, assisted living, and long-term care facilities?
